Urogynecology Q&A

What is urogynecology?

Urogynecology is a subspecialty of gynecology. It is an area of medical care that focuses on addressing issues related to pelvic floor disorders. The pelvic floor is a collection of muscles and connective tissues that give support to a woman’s reproductive organs as well as the bladder.

Most women don’t give much thought to this area of the body unless an issue arises, at which point it can be difficult to think of anything else. Gynecologists who choose to add urogynecology to their practice have advanced training in conditions that affect the pelvic floor.

What are some common urogynecology issues?

One of the more common problems that women can develop is called pelvic organ prolapse, which occurs when one of the pelvic organs loses its secure attachment and begins to protrude into or even through the vaginal canal.

While pelvic organ prolapse can be stressful, it’s a treatable condition. With prompt medical attention, it’s possible to reposition the organ and secure it in place with sutures and sometimes surgical slings.

Some additional examples of issues that bring patients in for care include:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Fecal (bowel) incontinence
  • Vaginal fistulas
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Complications of surgery or weakened pelvic floor muscles after surgery

There are many different ways to treat gynecologic conditions. Some involve removable devices worn inside the vagina, while others respond well to medication. Surgical intervention is sometimes needed to restore proper vaginal, fecal, or urinary function.

When is the right time to seek urogynecology care?

It’s important to listen to the messages your body sends and to seek professional care as soon as you notice something is amiss. Waiting to seek treatment can complicate the treatment path and increase the risk of complications either before or during treatment.

Changes in urinary function are among the most common reasons women see Dr. Hajyan. While it’s true that many women experience urinary incontinence as they age, that doesn’t mean these changes are inevitable as you grow older. There are treatments to help.

Every woman deserves to maintain a rich and fulfilling sex life at any age. If sex doesn’t bring the same enjoyment that it once did, reach out to Lamorinda Women’s Health to book a visit.
