Everyone prepares for the baby. The nursery is ready. The car seat is installed. The hosptial bag is packed. But what about you?
The weeks and months after delivery often called the "fourth trimester" are one of the most physically and emotionally demanding periods of a women's life. Yet it's also one of the most overlooked. You are expected to recover from one of the most significant physical events of your life while simultaneously caring for a brand-new human being, often on little sleep, with your body going through a hormonal upheaval that rivals puberty.
At Lamorinda Women's Health, we belive that postpartum care is not an aftertought. It is essential. And it deserves more than a single six-week checkup where someone asks if you are "feeling okay" before sending you on your way.
What Is the Fourth Trimester?
The fourth trimester refers to the first 12 weeks after delivery a period of profound transition for both baby and mother. Your baby is adjusting to life outside the womb. And you are adjusting to everything that comes with that.
Physically, your body is healing from delivery, whether vaginal or via cesarean section. Hormonally, estrogen and progestrone drop dramatically in the days following birth a shift that can trigger mood changes, anxiety, exhaustion, and even depression. Your pelvic floor, which has been under enormous strain, needs time and support to recover. Your thyroid may shift. Your sleep is disrupted. Your identity is changing.
This is not a time to simply "bounce back." This is a time to be supported.
What Postpartum Care Should Actually Include
A thorough postpartum evaluation goes far beyond a quick physical exam. At Lamorinda Women's Health, our postpartum care includes:
Hormonal Assessment and Management
The hormonal crash after delivery is real and significant. We evalute your estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid levels and address symptoms like mood changes, hair loss, night sweats, and fatigue; not by dismissing them as "normal," but by identifying and treating the root cause.
Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Screening
Postpartum depression affects up to 1 in 5 women, and postpartum anxiety may be even more common. These are not signs of weakness. They are medical conditions that deserve proper evaluation, compassionate support, and when needed treatment. We screen every postpartum patient and ensure no one falls through the cracks. When further support is needed, we provide warm referrals to caring, trusted psychologists and psychiatrists who specialized in perinatal mental health so you are never left to navigate this alone.
Pelvic Floor Evaluation
Leaking when you laugh, sneeze, or jump is common after delivery but it is not something you simply have to live with. We evaluate your pelvic floor health and, when needed, provide a warm referral to a trusted local pelvic floor physical therapist to help you regain strength, control, confidence.
Wound Healing and Recovery Assessment
Whether you had a vaginal delivery, perineal tearing, or a cesarean section, we assess how your body is healing and address any concerns including pain, scar tissue, or delayed healthing with attention and care.
Breastfeeding Support and Guidance
Breastfeeding can be beautiful and challenging in equal measure. We provide support, guidance, and referrals to lactation consultants when needed so you feel empowered in whatever feeding choice is right for you and your baby.
Sexual Health and Intimacy After Delivery
Many women experience pain, dryness, or loss of desire after delivery and very few feel comfortable talking about it. We do. Vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and low libido after childbirth are common, treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about.
Contraception Counseling
When you are ready, we help you choose the right contraception for your body, your lifestyle, and your family planning goals without pressure or a one-size-fits-all approach.
Thyroid and Nutritional Screening
Postpartum thyroiditis is more common than most people realize and can mimic or worsen postpartum depression and fatigue. We screen for thyroid dysfunction and nutritional deficiencies, including iron, vitamin D, and B12 that can profoundly affect how you feel.
Return-to-Exercise Guidance
When can you run again? When can you lift? When is it safe to do a sit-up? We provide personalized guidance on returning to exercise safely, so you protect your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles while rebuilding your strength.
Weight Management and Body Composition
If you are concerned about postpartum weight or body composition changes, we offer evidence-based support including body composition analysis, and when appropriate, medically supervised weight management without judgement.
You Are Not "Fine." You Are Recovering
One of the most common things we hear from postpartum patients is: "I thought I was just supposed to feel this way."
Exhauseted. Overwhelmed. Tearful. Disconnected. In pain.
These experiences are common but common does not mean normal, and it certainly does not mean inevitable. You deserve to feel like yourself again. You deserve a physician who sits with you, listens to you, and helps you navigate this season of your life with the same care and attention she would give to any other medical concern.
At Lamorinda Women's Health, every postpartum visit is directly with Dr. Hajyan. There are no handoffs. No rushed appointments. No one-size-fits-all checklists. Just honest, unhurried, personalized care for you.
When Should You Come In?
We recommend your first postpartum visit within 2-3 weeks of delivery, rather than waiting the traditional six weeks. Earlier evaluation means earlier support and that matters.
Whether you delivered locally or are transitioning your care to our practice, we welcome postpartum patients and are here for you every step of the way.
